Q. I get ".." instead of numbers for my screensets.

A. If you're using OS 8.5 or higher check your appearance setting (Found in theApperance control panel) You should set your system fonts to Chicago.

Q. Logic Audio freezes randomly.

A. While this is the hardest problem to fix, there's many possible reasons (including buggy software), there are some things to try. You
can try each sepereately or in combinations. Sometimes just running Norton, etc will fix random problems.
1. Move your Logic preference file to the desktop then start Logic. If using DAE move the Preference and Setup files to the desktop as well
then start Logic.
2. Rebuild your desktop by using a program such as Norton. If you have a PPC, launch "Find..." under the desktop' "File" Menu. Press the
option key down and select the menu with "name" as the first option. In this menu, select "visibility." Then do a find on all local disks for
invisible files. Trash all files that are called "Desktop DB" and "Desktop DF" and restart. Empty the trash right away after restarting and after the machine rebuilds its desktop databases. You can also start your Mac with the Command and Option key down. Hold them down
until you see a message asking you want to rebuild the desktop (this will lose any comments you have in the Get Info dialog).
3. Run Norton Disk Doctor or TechTool or DiskWarrior. Some problems are related to your HD file sturcture so you should run these programs on a weekly or daily basis. Follow the directions for the programs.
4. Zap the PRam by starting the Mac with the Option,Command, P, R key down. You may need to wait until you hear the startup chime four times to fully reset the hardware. You'll lose your date, time and other settings.

These all use your CPU processor time which can trip up sequencers as well as rob you of tracks and efxs.
1. Check to see if Appletalk is on, if so turn it off. If you need to have it on for your printer then disable desktop printing and monitor
extensions. You should turn off these extensions even if you don't use Appletalk. Also disable background printing and printer specfic desktop
printing extension, ie HP, Epson.
2. Turn off all modem, fax, voice, speech extensions (including AOL startup in the start up folder found in the system folder).
3. Turn off your menu time display.
4. Turn off Norton Disk Light Control Panel and Hard Disk Toolkit LightShow.

If these didn't work, then roll up your sleeves! Fix a pot of coffee as you may need it!
1. Disable all extension not required to start your system. If you're not sure, turn them all off. (this isn't the same as holding the shift
key down when you start up). If you're using OMS, DAE or have other audio hardware that's has a an extension needed for the system then
leave those on. (The AW/2/8 doesn't have one) If the problem goes away then you need to enable one extension at a time until you find the
problem extension. Always make sure you're using the correct (not necessarily the latest) extensions for the the OS version you're using.
2. If the above didn't work and you have additional cards in your Mac then remove any hardware not required for LogicAudio and disable any
system software related to the hardware (that's DAE, scanners, SCSI, firewire, USB cards, etc). Start the Mac with extensions off (hold down
the shift key). Using the built in Audio hardware see if the probelm goes away. If it does then replace one card at a time with it's enabled
system software. When the problem comes back, you'll know who to call about fixing the problem (the card manufacturer). Always make sure
you're using the correct (not necessarily the latest) extensions for the the OS version you're using.
3. Do a Clean Install of the OS and reinstall Logic. You may still have to do step 1 or 2 again after doing the Clean Install. To do a Clean
Install you have to start the Mac off your OS CD. You do this either by holding the "c" key down while booting or Command, Control, Shift and
Delete depending on your system. If possible do the Clean Install it on a different hard drive. You should also reinstall all your other
stoftware but you can also drag the old system additions (3rd party extension, control panels, preference files, additional system folders
and files not the OS files) if you feel they are fine once Logic is functioning like you think it should.

Q. What OS version should I use?

A.68K processors should get at least system 7.5. 7.6.0 is perfered. PPC processors should get system 7.6.0, 7.6.1, 8.1,8.5, 8.6. 9.04, 7.5.5 is fair.
7.5.3 is ok.Don't use 7.5.2 or 7.5.1. G3/G4 processors should use 8.6 or 9.04. 9.1 appears to be ok. OSX is unknown since Logic isn't native OSX yet. It does run in the OS9 mode of OSX but that just slows down the computer.

Q. Can better performance on a G4 be eeked out by using some "high performance ram" instead ?

A. The speed of Ram is important but uniformity is more important. "High performance" Ram is made from the fastest, most uniform and reliable (at the time of manufacturer) ram. That is why it's more expensive. Ram is made in sheets like cookies and some ram "cook" better then others. Ram manufacturer (the chips that is) do quality control checks, ram that passes the best is sold for the most, marginal ram is the cheapest. The board manufacturers, ie Team Memory, Centon, etc buy this ram, test their boards based on the market they sell to. They test the ram and sell it according to the quality, ie performance or generic (which doesn't mean bad just not tested as much so you'll find more defects and may have to "test" several boards before getting the performance you're looking for.) Most crashes that are ram related are caused by the ram not refreshing or updating consistanly.

BTW go into the Apple menu, select system profiler, drop down the built in memory arrow... the fastest memory you can have will be will be labeled 222S. The 128 megs that come with G4 is 322S. Not much of different in speed but you may find it worth the extra cost.
