Mackie Unveils New SRM Series Active Sound Reinforcement System

Mackie introduced their new SRM450 Active Sound Reinforcement Monitor and the SRS1500a Active Sound Reinforcement Subwoofer.

Mackie has taken the technology and features found in expensive, high end touring systems, and combined them with 50 years of transducer technology developed by RCF (Radio Cine Forniture, whom they purchased last yeatr), to develop a world class, affordable speaker system.

Mackie intends this introduction to establish a new product category; Active Sound Reinforcement Monitors.

The SRM Series was conceived and developed by an international team of Mackie engineers and designers. The active electronics are designed and manufactured in Mackie's Woodinville, Washington facility while speaker components are built at Mackie's RCF factory in Reggio Emilia, Italy; soon to renamed Mackie Europe.

"Active is the only way to do it right. And our wide dispersion, studio quality horns are the only way to let the entire audience hear it," commented Marcelo Vercelli, Product Manager for Mackie Designs Acoustic Division. "The SRM450 is so precise, so powerful and so accurate, we refuse to call it a PA speaker. It has the audio quality of a studio monitor. As far as features and performance are concerned, the SRM 450 is far and away superior to anything else available in its price range," added Vercelli.

The SRM450's horn design is a unique three-piece assembly derived from high-end studio monitor technology where wide dispersion and precise reproduction of voice and high frequencies is critical. This is the first time anyone has tried this technology in a high powered, sound reinforcement application coupled with high output compression drivers. The result is an extremely smooth off axis response, which allows everyone in front of the SRM450 to experience the same high-resolution audio no matter where they are seated.

The SRM450 has a new combination mic/line level control incorporating studio quality low noise mic preamp technology. This is built directly into the SRM450 allowing the enclosure to also function as a complete stand-alone PA system.

The SRM450 is the most sophisticated, versatile portable sound reinforcement speaker ever developed. It has the fidelity and performance found in Mackie's award winning HR824 Active Near Field Studio Monitors in a tough, portable and easy to use composite enclosure. The SRM450 is a monitor, not a PA speaker.

Mackie also showed a high output, low distortion extended bass reproduction enclosure that is ease to add to any system called the SRS1500a Active Sound Reinforcement Subwoofer. Of course, the SRS1500a is ideally suited to work with Mackie's SRM450 Active Sound Reinforcement Monitor.

The SRS1500a is a compact, high output sound reinforcement subwoofer system. The SRS1500a contains a 15" high precision long throw woofer and utilizes a road tested, bullet proof Mackie FR Series 600 watt High Current Amplifier to provide bone jarring bass reproduction (126 dB output). The amp is fully integrated into the enclosure and is cooled by a massive polished heat sink. Its small footprint and height make it an extremely versatile and portable low frequency speaker system, and its diminished size also makes it ideal for use in fixed installations where smooth integration within the architecture and design is critical.

The SRM Active Sound Reinforcement System is designed for a wide range of applications from entry level MI customers to AV rental houses. This truly is a"Swiss Army Knife" for sound reinforcement applications. Everybody involved with PA systems, rental and fixed installations is a target customer.

Mackie Introduces FUSSION Series Active Sound Reinforcement Speakers

Mackie introduced a proprietary line of new active sound reinforcement products, The FUSSION Series Active Sound Reinforcement Speakers. With the introduction of this technology, Mackie is creating a paradigm shift in the pro audio speaker market.

As a result of the 1998 acquisition of Italian speaker manufacturer Radio Cine Forniture (RCF), which has 50 years of loudspeaker development and manufacturing experience under it's belt, Mackie now has a world class acoustics manufacturing plant and the engineering resources required to be a dominant player in the professional speaker market segment. In that acquisition, Mackie also acquired FUSSION Audio of Costa Mesa, California.

"Application of this technology in the studio monitor market has become completely accepted as exemplified by the Mackie HR824's Active Near Field Studio Monitor's phenomenal success," remarked Marcelo Vercelli, Mackie Designs Product Manager, Acoustics Division.

"The focus of our development has been on three families of active speaker products. The flagship is the FUSSION 3000 Active Full Range Sound Reinforcement Speaker System. We believe active is the only way to do it right. The FUSSION 3000 is a full range 3-way active speaker that incorporates state of the art technology to deliver unparalleled output with the lowest possible distortion and highest clarity. It is ideal for use in sound reinforcement applications when precise reproduction of transients, high levels of intelligibility and compact size are required. Mackie has used active speaker technology to create a new standard in a "flown array" package. The FUSSION Series is a High Precision / Extreme Output line of speakers and will be made available to a selected number of Pro Audio dealers. Pro Sound dealers and contractors involved with professional PA, rental and fixed installations are our key targets for the FUSSION Series," added Vercelli.

The FUSSION 3000 is the first professional sound reinforcement speaker system to completely create an ideal union between speakers, compression drivers and amplifiers. To ensure long term reliability and performance, the amplifier cards and processor are mounted to a huge three square foot heat sink eliminating the need for fans and dramatically extending life expectancy while eliminating maintenance cycles.

The input and control panel offers unprecedented signal routing flexibility. All connections are via XLR connectors. There is a main input with a loop through output for connection of other enclosures. Additionally, there is a "sub-out" connector for connection to an active subwoofer system like the FUSSION 1800AS. This output incorporates a low pass filter for delivering a line level signal below 85Hz. For sound reinforcement situations where "fill" speakers are needed, there is a "fill-out" output connector with level and (0º - 180º) phase control. The FUSSION 3000 can run on 115V AC or 220V AC and features soft start circuitry that eliminates "pops" and precisely controls inrush surges.

The FUSSION 2000 is a compact, 3-way high output, medium throw, active speaker system. It features specially designed, high output transducers including a special eight inch, horn loaded midrange which allows the FUSSION 2000 to generate extremely low distortion (<.05%) at full power. The midrange operates between the frequencies of 500Hz and 2,500 Hz eliminating the placement of a crossover point in the middle of the critical voice frequency range. The result is super smooth phase and power response that deliver extraordinary intelligibility at extreme output levels. Frequencies above 2,500 Hz are reproduced by a 1.75" titanium diaphragm compression driver mounted to a 90 x 75-degree horn with a 1" exit throat. The FUSSION 2000 delivers deep bass through the use of two 12" high output woofers.

The FUSSION 800wa Active Stage Monitoring Speaker System is specifically designed for stage-monitoring applications where high output, wide dispersion sound reproduction is desired. The 800wa has an extremely low profile (10.5") and dramatically improves the sight lines of any stage. Active 800wa's can easily create a sophisticated monitoring system where each monitor can be individually mixed and set up with the user's personal preferences.

The FUSSION 800wa is a High Resolution, 2-way, low profile active stage monitoring speaker system. It features two specially designed, high output mid-bass transducers and a 1" exit throat compression driver mounted on a studio quality waveguide. The system is powered by a high current, low distortion 250-watt amplifier located within the speaker enclosure.

The eight-inch mid-bass transducers and waveguide are mounted at angle so they are ideally positioned facing the performer lowering the profile of the enclosure. The waveguide is the same as the one used in Mackie Designs HR824 active studio monitor system. High frequency information is reproduced by a Mackie High Precision M44 compression driver.

The FUSSION Series 1800SA (and 1800S) is an extreme output, active subwoofer system. Designed to live on the road, this subwoofer system is a "double-18" design broken down into two individual enclosures that make load in and load out quick and easy. It incorporates a 3000 watt high efficiency amplifier system and two front loaded, high precision 18-inch woofers mounted within their own cabinets. Connection and setup is a breeze, take your subwoofer line level signal and plug it in.

The FUSSION 1800SA is specifically designed to work with the FUSSION 1800S. The system has been specially designed to meet the rigors of powering high excursion 18" woofers. By being placed inches away from the driver within its own protected enclosure, the amplifier enjoys several benefits. First it sees constant impedance and a non-reactive load which substantially extends its life and increases performance. It also sits on a mammoth heat sink that eliminates the need for fans and eliminates service cycles. A tremendous benefit of having the amplifier located within the subwoofer cabinet is the speed with which power is delivered. This is achieved by eliminating heavy gauge, expensive speaker cables.

Mackie Announces New Hardware Options for Digital 8·Bus Console

Mackie has several hardware options for the popular Mackie Digital 8·Bus mixing console. The Mackie Digital 8·Bus features a unique hardware design that allows for customer-specific expansion and customization of the powerful Digital 8·Bus console. Nine card slots in the back of the D8B allow users to add a mix of I/O, effects and sync card options.

The Apogee Low Jitter Clock I/O, the PDI·8 8-channel Professional Digital Interface and the 24-Bit DIO·8 Expansion Card have been scheduled for release over the course of First Quarter (Q1) '99. The UFX Universal FX Card is planned for release during Second Quarter (Q2) '99.

Apogee Low Jitter Clock I/O

The Apogee Low Jitter Clock I/O card is the result of the combined commitment of Apogee and Mackie engineers to achieve the highest possible sonic quality and sync clock accuracy.

Bobb Haskitt, Product Manager, Digital Technology for Mackie Designs states an often overlooked fact in an all digital studio by those new to such a system,

"Professional recording studios usually require a common sync clock that is distributed to all the digital devices in the studio. Since digital devices run on separate clocks, it's important that they are all properly synchronized to insure the highest accuracy and best sonic quality achievable."

"When Mackie set out to build an optional sync card for the Digital 8·Bus, we sought a solution that would ensure the most accurate clocking possible. The accuracy, clarity and fidelity of a digital console's converters are determined by the accuracy of the systems clock. We weren't willing to make any compromises when it came to clock sync, so we went to the company with the best reputation in the world for A/D converters and the clocks that control them. We turned to Apogee Electronics. The Apogee Low Jitter Clock I/O card is the result of Apogee and Mackie coming together once again to offer our customers the highest quality audio solutions."

Even home and project studios need to be aware of this need if they plan on using a digital mixer, digital recorder, computer and digital efx processers together.

The Apogee Low Jitter Clock I/O card features one BNC input connector for receiving word clock from external sources such as standard video clock-to-word clock converters, workstations, or an additional D8B. There is also an additional BNC connector for word clock output. Mackie expects to ship the card in fist quarter 1999.

PDI·8

The PDI·8 is a newly designed 8-channel professional digital interface that supports 24-Bit AES/EBU format. Each stereo input features extremely high quality, real time, sample rate conversion if desired. Apogee's UV22 Super CD Encoding process, for recording to 16-Bit media, is available on the card's outputs as well. The PDI·8 AES/EBU expansion card can be used in any of the Tape I/O expansion slots or the Alt I/O slot on the D8B and can be combined with any other optional I/O card.

The PDI·8 has one DB25 connector that requires a 25-pin to AES/EBU breakout cable (with four XLR male and four XLR female connections on the other end). Cable not included. The PDI·8 requires version 2.0 Mackie Real Time OS.

24-Bit DIO·8

The 24-Bit DIO·8 card is an I/O expansion card designed to interface with Tascam DA-Series multitrack tape machines and the original Alesis ADAT. These popular recorders are 16-Bit devices. Since Alesis and other companies have adopted higher resolution formats (20-Bit and 24-Bit), Mackie is now making available the DIO·8 as a 24-Bit interface card. Current DIO·8 users can have their cards upgraded from 16-Bit to 24-Bit as needed, at no charge, by their local Mackie Designs Digital Systems dealer or distributor.

UFX

The UFX Universal Effects Card is the processing engine required to run many third-party software plug-in applications on the D8B. The UFX card is a powerful expansion option that is capable of running up to four effect processes simultaneously on each card. Up to four UFX cards can be added to the Mackie Digital 8·Bus.

Mackie's Third-Party software applications will be announced individually as the products near completion. Stay tuned for significant continuing developments for the Mackie Digital 8·Bus mixing console, which features a unique, open software architecture that allows users to expand the capabilities of the console as their professional needs demand.
