Tascam NAMM News 2008Tascam had a few new products for NAMM this year. Two of them started to ship in time for Christmas, the rest will be coming in the 1 quarter of 2008.
The TASCAM DR-1 puts world-dominating power into your
pocket. Its built-in stereo microphones include a unique variable angle
mechanism, so you can set it to record from any angle. The DR-1 is the first
portable recorder to include a 1GB card, so you'll have plenty of CD or
MP3-quality recording time for long rehearsals and concerts. And with a
street price of just $299, everyone's gonna want one.
A pair of microphones is mounted on a variable angle mechanism, which allows the recorder to record from almost any angle. The built-in stereo condenser microphones are arranged for a wide stereo image, and an external mic can also be used. The unit includes a generous 1GB SD card for hours of recording at MP3 or WAV file formats. The DR-1 also includes auto gain control and analog limiting for easy setup and a low-frequency cutoff to eliminate handling or wind noise.
...and it doesn't get any easier than the DP-02 Digital
PortastudioTASCAM's DP-02 is the 8-track digital recorder that makes recording fun, ditching menus for simple knobs and faders. Based on over 25 years of cassette Portastudios, it sports dedicated controls for level, pan, effects send and EQ instead of the menu-cursor interface found on most other recorders. You make music with two hands with the DP-02 - just reach and twist a knob when your creativity strikes.
The DP-02 records up to 8 tracks to its built-in 40GB hard drive on the DP-02 or Flash Ram on the DP-02CF. A pair of CD-quality XLR mic inputs includes phantom power for condenser mics and a direct guitar input. High and low EQ controls for level and frequency are provided for every channel. The DP-02 also includes a multieffects processor, stereo reverb, even a dedicated stereo channel for recording your mix. You can transfer tracks and mixes to a computer using USB 2.0, or burn a master disc in the CD drive. Also available is the DP-02CF, which records to Compact Flash media to make it easier than ever to afford a digital Portastudio.
Don't spend hours configuring a computer for recording when you can afford a simple box dedicated to recording music. No other workstation makes recording as easy, affordable and fun as the TASCAM DP-02.
Features:
With sixteen inputs, the TASCAM US-1641 is the ideal
choice for musicians to record the whole band to a computer. Eight mic/line
inputs plus six line inputs gives you plenty of channels for a large ensemble,
drumset, live recording or worship service. It includes Cubase LE4, Steinberg's

TASCAM'S latest breakthrough for home recording
is the VL-A series of reference monitors, a value-priced lineup of great-sounding
reference monitors. The lineup includes the VL-A4, VL-A5 and VL-A8, which
are 4", 5" and 8" two-way reference monitors. Each of the
models is self-powered and employs balanced TRS/XLR combination inputs.
A deep-cabinet design with bass ports (front-mounted on the VL-A5 and VL-A8)
extends the low end beyond similarly-priced units. High and low frequency
controls on the VL-A5 and VL-A8 allow the user to tailor the monitors response
to their own studio.
Also available is the LF-S8 subwoofer, an 8" ported design which
extends the range of the monitor system for productions that demand deep
bass response. Just as PortaStudio democratized recording for the home musician,
the VL-A series brings precise monitoring performance and striking industrial
design to the home studio.
The hit-making Giga sampling platform is soon to be
available on the Mac. TASCAM's GVI 4 features Mac OS X, Windows XP and Windows
Vista support, for plug-in compatibility with software like Logic Pro, Live,
Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, SONAR, Digital Performer and many more. GVI 4
is compatible with all of the best libraries - loading GigaStudio samples
natively instead of converting - and offers up to double the polyphony of
competing samplers so your performance never gets cut off. With a simple
interface and great-sounding instrument library, GVI 4 is a must-have instrument
for producers, composers and musicians who need the best.
GVI 4 installs in VSTi, Audio Units and RTAS formats, making it compatible with dozens of workstation applications. One instance supports 16 channels of MIDI playback. Add as many instances of GVI as your computer can handle for 16 more MIDI channels each. Browse your sample library and load sounds from the GVI interface, or use the new standalone QuickSound database to quickly search all your hard drives (Windows version only). Like GVI 3, GVI 4 makes it easy to stack multiple instruments on a MIDI channel for even bigger sounds
GigaStudio libraries are the best-sounding sampled instruments you can buy, and the integration of GVI 4 into your workstation makes workflow a breeze. Many sample libraries use Giga's iMIDI engine, which includes advanced Legato, Random, Alternation and Round-Robin modes to make sampled performances sound more lifelike. Unique technology like the Dynamic Expression Filter provides real time timbral control, even after note-on, so your performances will be dynamic and lifelike. To edit the instruments yourself, use the QuickEdit tab to change synth parameters like attack time, filtering, and tuning. Changes get saved with your DAW project, or can be saved as GVI presets, so they won't overwrite the original sample on your hard drive.
Not only is GVI 4 the simplest sampler to use, it's also the most powerful. In performance tests, GVI outperformed NI's Kontakt and Steinberg's Halion, playing up to twice as many voices on the same system. GVI loads Giga samples without conversion or emulation, so that the samples sound the way the creative soundware developers intended. It's no wonder that Giga is used by most top-grossing film composers - the most demanding audience for a sampler's performance, sound quality and realism.
GVI 4 comes with a sound set packed with great-sounding, musical samples from companies like SONiVOX, Wavelore and Larry Seyer Digital, with more to be announced soon. All of the basics are covered like pianos, strings, drums and bass, as well as colorful additions like pipe organs, zithers and whistles. If you've been getting your sounds from a hardware synth, you'll be blown away by the realistic, deep and musical sound of Giga. You'll be making polished-sounding music right out of the box, whether you're scoring films, recording hip hop, producing a rock session or playing live jazz. GVI 4 gives you the sound, the compatibility and the performance to make your music come to life.

Take the Tascam New Products Tour
The new TASCAM Giga Virtual Instrument (GVI)
is the first plug-in sampler instrument powered by Giga, the world's best
sampling engine. It shares many of the specs that made GS3 the only choice
for professionals worldwide, such as unlimited polyphony, 96kHz/24-bit sample
support and embedded GigaPulse convolution. GVI runs as a 16-part multi-timbral
plug-in instrument in both VSTi and RTAS formats, for compatibility with
virtually all Windows workstation software - including Pro Tools. No other
software sampler offers unobstructed access to the finest sound libraries
in the world, and no other plug-in offers the unmatched power of Giga.
"Everyone knows that GigaStudio has been the go-to sampler for composers, producers and creative musicians everywhere," says Johnny DeLeon, Software Channel Manager for TASCAM. "Yet many musicians crave the power of GigaStudio in a plug-in that integrates with their music workstation software. With GS3 technology like iMIDI legato and round robin rules, plus integrated GigaPulse technology, GVI provides the most realistic sounds available to the computer-based musician."
Those who want to create new libraries from scratch or get into even deeper instrument editing can upgrade to GigaStudio 3 Orchestra, which also features the zero-latency Kernel performance, GigaPulse Pro processing and sophisticated mixing features that make it the ultimate professional sampling workstation.
TASCAM GVI will be available in the Spring of 2006 with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $399. To take GVI to the next level, TASCAM is already in development of a Mac version.

Breakthrough Solo Violin Library Fuses Convolution Technology With Sampling For Unmatched Realism
TASCAM's new GigaViolin fuses the realism of sampling with the power of convolution-based modeling to redefine what is possible from a sample library. GigaViolin takes advantage of the processing power offered by GigaStudio, the world's premiere software sampler, to create the most realistic solo violin rendered by any technology. The unique convolution-based body resonance technology takes a raw bowed string sample and uses GigaPulse technology to model a varied selection of rich, vintage violin bodies. The result is unprecedented realism with notes that naturally decay, and unmatched performance possibilities - including dynamic portamento & vibrato, and changing bowing articulations while performing. At any time, the performer can interchange violin bodies and microphone placements to find the one that best suits the music.
"GigaViolin is far more than a sample library; it's a collection of sampling innovations applied to the most expressive and recognizable instrument next to the human voice", remarks Johnny DeLeon, Software Channel Manager for TASCAM. "This library marks the first time the performance of an instrument has been separated from the instrument's natural resonance, and the result is astonishing flexibility and realism. Not only does the performer effectively get multiple violins to choose from, but the technology is more musician-friendly for performance and composition."
In addition to the breakthrough realism offered by BRT, Body Resonance Technology, GigaViolin uses the latest advances in GigaStudio 3 for dynamic performance. The DEF Dynamic Expression Filter allows the performer to expressively control the bowing intensity and dynamics while playing. The PRF Portamento Reshaping Filter generates perfect legato and portamento lines without needing separate samples, with the ability to change the portamento time in the middle of a performance. The library offers a broad selection of articulations, including legato, staccato, spiccato, sforzando, tremolos, trills, pizzicato and many more - plus Divisi 4 ensemble samples.
All of these features are further bolstered by iMIDI rules that alternate bowing, randomize sample selection, automatically switch between mono and poly modes and much more. The end result is a breakthrough in sampling technology and the most realistic rendering of a violin ever achieved. GigaViolin is ideal for film scoring, composition, pop or any style that requires the emotive power of solo violin.

Features:
The TASCAM VL-S21 is an affordable monitoring system for home recording and practicing. This self-powered satellite system provides 5W per channel to the desktop speakers and 15W to the ported sub. The desktop speakers are also remarkably thin, allowing these stylish speakers to be used at home or in the studio.
The left and right speakers use NXT technology drivers for full-range sound in a thin driver package. This approach improves on the traditional woofer and tweeter design by eliminating the phase cancellation that occurs when using multiple drivers and crossovers. NXT technology drivers provide wider dispersion, more uniform loudness and reduced room interaction than competing technologies. A single NXT driver covers a wider range than traditional drivers, reducing the phase distortion caused by using multiple drivers and crossovers.
Unlike multimedia speakers designed for listening to MP3s and video games, the VL-S21 was designed with a flat frequency response for critical listening and mixing. They're ideal for home recording studios, practicing with our CD Trainers, or monitoring desktop and laptop computer recording systems. Created for musicians looking for an affordable speaker system that doesn't take up a lot of desk space, the VL-S21 is an excellent entry-level monitoring solution.
