Winter NAMM Show 2008

They were demostrating their current version of Melodyne (see our video from 2007 below). They have successfully tested the new Logic Pro 8 with their complete product range on Macs with both Intel and PPC processors. The latest AU versions of MelodyneBridge and Melodyne plugin work flawlessly inside Logic 8. In addition to that, Melodyne essential, Melodyne uno, Melodyne cre8 and Melodyne studio can easily run as a ReWire client to Logic 8.

Also version 3.2.2 of Melodyne studio and Melodyne cre8 as well as version 1.8.1 of Melodyne essential and Melodyne uno are now compatible to Apple's latest version of OS 10.5.1 (Leopard). Any problems related to the use of ReWire and the MelodyneBridge under Leopard have been solved. We also did some changes to increase the overall performance and stability of Melodyne and we included a solution to avoid problems when using the Spot-to-Pro-Tools feature with Pro Tools version 7.4. All users will benefit from these changes, with Leopard as well as with Tiger, Win XP or Vista.

For more information about their products see our NAMM Show News 2007 below.

Celemony Announces Melodyne cre8/studio Version 3.2

Celemony Software GmbH announced Version 3.2 of Melodyne studio and cre8, which offer new playback algorithms as well as various minor improvements and bugfixes. The updates will be available free of charge to registered users of Melodyne cre8/studio 3 from the beginning of March onwards.

The extended algorithm for polyphonic and rhythmic material in Melodyne studio 3.2 offers adjustable formant correction, which, on the one hand, makes highly natural, acoustically neutral, transposition now possible even with multi-voice signals such as pianos, guitars and choirs, as well as, on the other hand, opening up interesting and rewarding sound design possibilities when working with drum loops and percussive material. Meanwhile, Melodyne cre8 3.2 has been equipped with a new algorithm for percussive material that offers enormous improvements in terms of sound compared with its predecessors.

Among the other new features of Melodyne cre8/studio 3.2 are the combined scroll/zoom beams that were introduced by Melodyne plugin, an alternative grey colour scheme for the user interface, various improvements in the display and handling of percussive material, and a more user-friendly implementation of the copy protection.

Melodyne studio

Melodyne studio is the largest member of the Melodyne family. With this most powerful version you are no longer limited to the editing of monophonic melodies, but you can also handle complex textures and even polyphonic material, such as chords or song mixes! Furthermore, Melodyne studio is a complete audio multi-tracker with an unlimited number of tracks and a high resolution of up to 32 bit and 192 kHz.

Recording artists and engineers have known about Melodyne for years. For a long time, though, it was only monophonic vocal and instrumental parts that could benefit from Melodyne's much-admired editing algorithms: algorithms capable of everything from minor corrections of intonation to extreme pitch shifting and from the subtle modification of grooves to drastic time stretching.

Melodyne studio 3.x introduces this magic to full chords and complex audio signals as well; so now harmonic material (such as rhythm guitar or piano parts) can be transposed (without altering the tempo), slowed down or sped up (without altering the pitch) and even quantized. What's more, all this can be done in real time with the highest sound quality for which Melodyne is famous. You might already know pitch shifting and time stretching from other programs, yet with Melodyne, even extreme alterations still sound natural and convincing. Please check our sound examples to hear the difference!

Although Melodyne studio is the perfect tool for correcting timing and intonation of audio recordings, it is also far more than just that. It is a full multi-track application which allows for complete song productions and creative arrangements. Melodyne studio offers you an unlimited number of audio tracks depending on your computer system.

However, if you prefer to record in your familiar recording software (eg. ProTools, Logic, Cubase, Sonar and more), Melodyne studio supports a full integration, too. You have two options to link both applications: the ReWire protocol and Celemony's MelodyneBridge. For most production scenarios the MelodyneBridge is far more convenient to work with than a ReWire connection.

The Melodyne Sound Library

Melodyne studio 3 can read sample libraries created using Melodyne technology such as those of Ueberschall's Liquid Instruments (from version 3.0) or the Melodyne Sound Libraries (from version 3.1), thereby obtaining access to an almost inexhaustible supply of licks and phrases.

Even if you are familiar with previous versions of Melodyne, you might want to consider an update to Melodyne studio 3 to benefit from the automatic and reliable note recognition or the Correct Pitch and Quantize Time macros, which allow the most common flaws in vocal and instrumental recordings to be removed with a few mouse clicks.

Melodyne studio 3 is not just far easier to operate and better attuned to the working practices of musicians and recording engineers than its predecessors but also better structured. Context-sensitive combi-tools, logically arranged menus and intuitive new methods of operating in the arrange and edit windows streamline the workflow as well as reducing the time taken to master the program. With the new Melody Manager you can comfortably browse audio files on your hard disk.

Peter Neubäcker

"With Melodyne3, the note-based rearrangement and remixing of songs are child's play," says Peter Neubäcker, the founder and mastermind of Celemony. "And we've streamlined the workflow in numerous ways in response to requests from users. As a result, Melodyne is far simpler and more practice-oriented than ever before." Note: It is always advantageous to install additional RAM. Our recommendation for Melodyne is 1 GB or more. OS X in particular benefits from additional RAM when working with audio.

cre8

The cre8 version of Melodyne has all the same features of the Studio except: it's limited to 8 tracks, lacks for support to work on source material of chords, full stereo mixes, as well as sample rates to 96k and 24bit audio files.

Melodyne plugin

Melodyne plugin integrates the most important of Melodyne's functions directly into a host sequencer. Correct pitch and timing, quantize audio, restructure melodies and more it has never been so easy. Supported interfaces are VST, AU and RTA And a free Melodyne plugin for registered users of Melodyne studio!

With the ultra-flexible Melodyne plugin, editing audio becomes fast and easy. Thanks to its musical display, unique time-stretching and pitch-shifting algorithms, unmatched sound quality and intuitive operation, Melodyne plugin makes the resolution of timing and intonation problems child's play, thereby simplifying, and increasing the efficiency of, day-to-day music production in the studio. At the same time, Melodyne plugin offers fantastic creative possibilities way beyond the scope of conventional audio software.

Melodyne plugin's main area of application is the intuitive correction of the intonation and timing of vocal recordings a sensitive task it performs supremely well and in the highly musical manner for which Melodyne software is known all over the world. Once you have transferred to Melodyne plugin the passages you wish to edit, you can edit with great precision the pitch, vibrato, drift, timing, volume and formants of every note in the recording individually! Intelligent tools that adapt automatically to the current task streamline the workflow, whilst for the two commonest tasks, correcting errors of intonation and timing, Melodyne plugin provides the Correct Pitch and Quantize Time macros that allow you to optimize an entire recording with a single mouse-click.

With Melodyne plugin you can edit and optimize not only vocals but also single-voice instrumental recordings as well as drum and percussion tracks in an extraordinarily flexible way. With a drum loop, for example, you can alter the position, length, pitch and volume of individual hits, straighten up the timing, make the whole loop swing, or even give it an entirely new rhythm through re-quantization.

Melodyne's famous algorithm for single-voice material as well as a new algorithm for percussive material ensure that even when you introduce extreme modifications, the results remain impressively natural and the sound quality is in no way impaired. The programmable scale snap function provides for harmonically correct transposition, and the multi-level Undo function for relaxed editing. Virtual knobs that can be automated in the host and controlled via MIDI offer real-time control of Pitch, Formants and Volume.
